Self-Awareness
October 24, 2009
This idea is so interesting to me. Like so many intangible things, it is something that I always want more of; but the more I gain, the more I realize I don’t have. This is something I yearn for, I am still such a mystery even to myself. Things I know about my behavior that I have no explanation for, or why I act a certain way in a certain situation, I have no idea. All the time I wish I had a manual for myself. These days we have many tools to help us gain knowledge of ourselves, what our personalities are and how they function, how we behave in social situations, what our greatest strengths are, and for Christ-followers, even how the Holy Spirit has gifted us. It is amazing to use these tools and see how accurate they truly are when they describe us merely from answering a set of test questions (though they definitely can be wrong). Yet these merely tell us the bare bones of who we are, there is still so much to understand, experiences to take into account, and change occurs constantly. There is only One who knows us through and through. We can seek Him and know Him better each day, and as a result we tend to learn more about ourselves as well. To know ourselves can help us in so many ways, especially when it comes to understanding the people around us. To know what we are and how we act, allows to understand people that are not like us and helps us to love them more effectively. So pray for your own self-awareness and learn to understand and interact with others better as a result.

Very interesting. I’m always astounded by how little I know myself and how easily many of my thoughts and actions can surprise me. It is awesome to know that there is someone who knows me through and through because I sure don’t. Great post.

A wonderful book on the subject is titled, “Awareness” written by Anthony De Mello…read it during my hospital residency…and is one of the 5 most important books I have read…made me pause and ask why I was doing the things I was doing…why I allowed others to impact me, which is key in ministry as well as life…but for any person in relationships, understanding self, and understanding how / why we respond to others is critical for healthy relationships….written with great sensitivity to where you are in your Christian journey, this book will not help you change anyone but it will help you pause and get to know YOU and become more aware of your relationship with others….

that whole idea of finally understanding everything is one thing i’m so excited for about heaven. getting to see the big picture, understanding myself, seeing God, the whole thing. even though we can grow in our understanding here, i feel like we’re just sucking up smoke with a vacuum cleaner. the smoke is getting thinner, but its still there. when the fog finally lifts it’ll just be mind-blowing.
