Local Impact: Established Partnerships.
We like to think of our Established Partnerships as the "roots of the tree." These are areas in the community that someone on our team had a heart to reach, so they went after locating a place to serve on a regular basis. After establishing a contact at the organization, they sought to build up a team around it. Established Partnerships are a place that you can get test out an area of service by joining a team that has already been set up. Forging relationships with the organization, and the people involved with the organization, is the most unique opportunity of these partnerships. Check out our opportunities below.
Pregnancy Helpline (PH)
Pregnancy Helpline (PH) of Madison exists to support young mothers and / or fathers who have chosen to keep a baby through counseling, the Sharing Center, Crib sharing, layette, and breastfeeding programs. There is also support for individuals affected by abortion. What we do:
Sorting clothes helps sift through donated clothing to make it easier for families to pick out the right things at the Sharing Center whch operates on Satudays from 10am-1pm. Women and men visit the Sharing Center and receive maternity or children's clothing (up to 3T), diapers and formula free of charge.
Where:
Holy Redeemer School 124 W.Johnson St. (about a 10 minute walk from Memorial Union)
When:
Wednesday PMs 6.30-8pm (a group of us walk over the the school, sort through lots clothes and listen to sweet tunes). On Saturdays volunteers will guide mothers/ families through the "sharing center" which is like a small store. The volunteers will help families determine what they need and where to find it in the store, this opportunity requires training, if you are interested in getting trained contact Maggie. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry
The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is the largest food pantry in Dane County, serving 20,000 families in 2006. The pantry gives families up to 3 days of food and operates like a grocery store. Families can come and pick out what they want once every 30 days. What:
The food pantry needs volunteers to help stock shelves, and to host families as they go through the food pantry (make them feel welcome and help them keep track of their "food points").
Where:
Close to campus! It's on the other side of Lake Wingra (1309 Culmen St.) and rides could be arranged for anyone needing one.
When:
It depends on how many people are interested. The pantry said they could use groups of preferably 4-5 (but up to 10) once a month, twice a month, or whatever. Times are also flexible but Friday from 1-3p has worked best in the past. If you're interested, sign up and we'll figure out what works best for how often we stop by.
